DESCRIPTION
Muddy River Restoration Project, Boston
24’ x 24’ x 16’ Span x 10’ Rise Arch-Box
Three ECO-SPAN® precast concrete arch-boxes play a significant role in preserving an historical section of Boston. Two of the arch-box bridges featured 24’ spans designed to handle heavy water flow under Riverway Drive and Brookline Ave. The third precast arch bridge was a 16’ span under Louis Pasteur Ave. This area experienced an extreme flood event in 1996 during which damage was estimated at $70 million.
The bridges and wingwalls are supported by 36” diameter x 50’ long drilled caissons. Granite veneers with capstones provide a durable and aesthetic end treatment for each bridge.
The United Stated Army Corps of Engineers New England District undertook a project to restore and prevent flooding along an historic network of rivers known as the Emerald Necklace. This high-profile project along a series of parks created by Frederick Olmsted in the early 1890s included three small bridges.
