DESCRIPTION

U.S. 31 Kokomo Freeway Over Wildcat Brook
32′ Span x 10′ Rise Arch Box

In an effort to decrease travel time along US 31, a major north-south highway in Central Indiana, INDOT added a bypass around the city of Kokomo. At Wildcat Creek, a bridge was needed to carry not only the new road but also a flyover ramp for CR 500S. In addition, a wildlife crossing was needed to improve safety by allowing deer to pass under the road.

USI Consultants was able to meet all of these needs in one structure by specifying a 278’ long three-sided arch. Walsh Construction chose a specially designed ECO-SPAN® arch-box shape. The 32’ span provides space for the stream and wildlife path while supporting an MSE wall which carries the flyover ramp up to 23’ above the top of the arch. The structure is supported by a driven pile foundation system.
