DESCRIPTION

Route 175 Over New Britain
48′ Arch-Box

In an infrastructure rebuild, a deteriorating 100’ span box beam bridge over an abandoned railroad right of way was replaced with precast arch bridge units to make way for a new bus way road between New Britain and Hartford, Connecticut.

A three-stage phase demolition plan was developed to allow Route 175 to remain open during construction. Precast arch units were installed under the existing bridge using a self-propelled modular transport (SPMT) vehicle with a special lifting frame.

The new 48’ span accommodates two traffic lanes, a shoulder, and a bike/pedestrian path.
